National Infertility Awareness Week Highlights a Need for Egg Donation

Starting on April 24th, RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association will kick off its 27th annual National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW). NIAW highlights the need for and value of third-party reproductive services like egg donation. As an essential part of modern family building, egg donation is crucial for many couples and individuals, including those from the LGBT community, single men who are using a gestational surrogate, and those facing infertility.

#StartAsking for NIAW
This year’s NIAW theme is #StartAsking, which encourages those undergoing fertility treatment or third-party reproduction to discuss their experiences. This raises awareness of infertility as a disease. For many who have experienced an infertility diagnosis, this disappointment is compounded by a lack of sensitivity from family, friends, and co-workers, even those who mean well when inquiring about a pregnancy. This glitch in awareness often stems from an absence of education about infertility. Infertility is a real medical condition, not just “bad luck” or a hurdle you have to overcome.

What may seem like a simple question about infertility to one person can be hurtful to someone who needs an egg donor in order to have a baby. Questions that can seem sincere, but may actually be too personal to answer, include:

• Why can’t you adopt instead of using an egg donor?
• How much does egg donation cost?
• Why is your egg donor a stranger?
• Can you trust your egg donor?
• Don’t egg donors only care about compensation?

Even if these questions stem from curiosity and honest concern, they can be hurtful to someone who has struggled with infertility and is working with a qualified, screened egg donor they have carefully selected. Egg Donor America is proud to support events like NIAW because they encourage infertility patients to have open, honest conversations within their comfort zones about what it’s really like to use third-party reproductive services.

There are still so many unfortunate myths and misconceptions about egg donation, and donors and future parents alike deserve more opportunities to help improve the conversation about infertility.
